What to Do Before Changing DNS Records

Protect websites, email, forms, and verification services with a careful DNS-change checklist.

Inventory the current setup

  • Record nameservers and export or screenshot all DNS records.
  • Identify website hosting, email provider, verification records, subdomains, and third-party tools.
  • Confirm which account actually controls authoritative DNS.

Plan the specific change

  • Follow the destination provider’s exact host, type, and value.
  • Lower TTL in advance only when you understand the timing.
  • Avoid deleting old records until the replacement is verified and conflicts are understood.

Test after the change

  • Check the main website and important subdomains.
  • Send and receive email from outside the organization.
  • Test forms, authentication links, and services that rely on TXT or CNAME records.
