How to Recognize a Fake Microsoft Support Popup

Close browser-based Microsoft impersonation warnings without calling scammers or installing remote software.

Recognize browser scare tactics

  • Loud alarms, countdowns, locked-looking pages, and urgent phone numbers are common scam design.
  • A web page cannot reliably diagnose the whole computer.
  • Check whether the warning is inside the browser rather than a trusted Windows security panel.

Close it without interacting

  • Use Alt+F4 or Task Manager if the tab refuses to close.
  • Reopen the browser without restoring the suspicious page.
  • Remove notification permission for the site and clear its browsing data.

Check for follow-up damage

  • Run Windows Security and inspect recent downloads and installed apps.
  • Change passwords if any were entered or shown during a call.
  • Contact the bank if payment or account access occurred.
When to ask for help

Stop guessing when the problem keeps coming back

Ask for help if the popup returns, software was installed, someone connected remotely, or you called the displayed number.
