Computer Running Slow

Why Does My Laptop Fan Run Constantly?

Find the software, heat, dust, or update problem that keeps a laptop fan running loudly.

Check what the computer is doing

  • Restart, wait several minutes, and see whether the fan settles.
  • Sort Task Manager or Activity Monitor by CPU use and identify the busiest application.
  • Let operating-system updates, cloud sync, or antivirus scans finish if they are actively working.

Help the laptop release heat

  • Use the laptop on a hard surface so blankets or cushions do not block vents.
  • Clear dust around external vents with the computer powered off; do not force objects inside.
  • Keep the charger and laptop away from direct sun or other heat sources.

Know the warning signs

  • A fan that grinds, rattles, or never spins needs physical inspection.
  • Unexpected shutdowns, extreme heat, or battery swelling should not be ignored.
  • Avoid one-click optimizer apps that promise to cool the computer by deleting files.
When to ask for help

Stop guessing when the problem keeps coming back

Ask for help if one process stays abnormally high, the laptop overheats during light work, or the fan makes a mechanical noise.
