Identify the equipment
- The modem connects to the internet provider line. The router creates your wired and Wi-Fi network.
- Some providers use one combined gateway that performs both jobs.
- Take a photo of the cables before moving anything if the setup is unfamiliar.
Use the correct restart sequence
- Unplug power from the modem and router, not the network cables.
- After 30 seconds, reconnect the modem or gateway and give it several minutes.
- Reconnect the separate router after the modem is online, then wait for Wi-Fi and test.
Read the result
- A blinking startup sequence is normal. A red or persistent warning light may indicate a line or provider issue.
- If only one computer remains offline, restart or reconnect that device.
- Avoid the factory-reset button unless you are prepared to rebuild the network name, password, and custom settings.
Stop guessing when the problem keeps coming back
Call the ISP if the modem never regains its service light. Ask for tech help if the modem is online but the router or individual devices still cannot connect.
